On Friday, September 23rd Chapman NSSLHA ushered a movie event for the Emerging Scholars conference. NSSLHA members enjoyed a viewing of the film “Wretchers and Jabberers”, a documentary about two men with autism who travel around the world to dispel myths about the disorder, and were even able to meet the Larry and Tracy!

Chapman NSSLHA was asked by ASHA to attend the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) convention at the anaheim convention center!

WHAT WE DID…

Gave a presentation to high school students in which we talked about what it’s like to be an SLP and how to become an SLP
Represented NSSLHA nationally in the exhibition hall, meeting with high school students, parents, and teachers!
Conducted free hearing screenings for the convention attendees

Congrats to Chapman NSSLHA for being awarded with gold chapter recognition again this year! Chapter Honors are awarded to the NSSLHA Chapters that demonstrate an awareness of student issues and concerns, outreach to the community, educational opportunities, and social and fundraising activities promoting both the professions and the national association.

National NSSLHA chose Stuttering Foundation of America as the charity to receive donations for the annual NSSLHA Loves campaign. Stuttering Foundation of America is the world’s largest nonprofit organization working towards preventing and improving treatment of stuttering. Chapman NSSLHA organized a successful fundraiser at our local Zito’s Pizza for the cause. Following the event we presented Zito’s with a certificate acknowledging them for their help in contributing to Stuttering Foundation of America (pictured above).

Our chapter donated recently and just received a “thank you” email from the president that we would like to share.

Described the role of a speech-language pathologist and the education needed to become a speech-language pathologist
Gave parents strategies for promoting their children’s speech and language development
Provided tips for communicating with older people
Explained how speech and language disorders affect academic success and learning

Congratulations to the 28 graduates!

WHAT WE DID AT THE GRADUATION BREAKFAST…

Cohort 2 presented the outgoing NSSLHA executive officers with flowers for all of their hard work and dedication to NSSLHA
The Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Educational Studies stopped by to congratulate the graduates
NSSLHA presented Gina Nimmo and the Childhood Language Center of Orange County with an iPad!
More awards were given!
The graduates were given gifts from the department…license plate frames that said “Let’s talk about speech-language pathology”, and clipboards!
The graduates participated in a hooding ceremony tradition, in which they offered their hoods to the faculty, who assisted them with putting them on

The graduates of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program walked with the rest of the students from the College of Educational Studies. Congrats again grads!
